Sand production is a worldwide problem that results in billions of dollars of losses due to delayed/lost production and workover costs, and is generally addressed through the installation of sand control. In this presentation, we review the basics of sand control including factors affecting sand failure and production, the impact of sand production and the conditions under which sand control maybe required. We also introduce the various sand control techniques in the industry today and highlight their advantages, disadvantages and application envelopes.
