Various techniques are available to control sand production but gravel packing is recognized as one of the most reliable, so long as a complete pack is achieved. Shunt packing uses viscous carrier fluids with higher concentrations of gravel and shunted screens to allow slurry to bypass any blockage/bridge and ensure a complete pack. In this presentation, we discuss the principles, packing mechanisms and design considerations of shunt packing along with its challenges and application window.
